What is the possibility to host the World Cup every two years rather than every four? The impetus was the Saudi football federation, which formally requested earlier this year that Fifa do a "feasibility assessment on the implications" of holding both the men's and women's World Cups every two years.Fifa President Gianni Infantino took up the proposal, and it was quickly introduced before a Fifa congress. At that meeting, 166 of Fifa's 211 member associations voted in favor of the feasibility study that is now underway.
In an average year, there are usually five FIFA international breaks. They would be reduced to one or two with this new suggestion, reducing the requirement for players to travel back and forth between their clubs and international duty within defined Fifa times.
Despite this possible convenience, the proposal is widely opposed, particularly in Europe. The continent is home to some of the world's most popular and important football clubs. As a result, their voice is heard louder than that of the majority of Fifa members.
However, throughout Africa, and particularly in South Africa, the belief is that a two-year World Cup would be advantageous to the region in the long run – especially because the 2026 World Cup would feature 48 nations rather than the customary 32.South Africa has not qualified for a FIFA World Cup since 2002, however they did participate in the 2010 tournament as hosts.South Africa is the only African country to have hosted the football tournament.
The South African Football Association's (Safa) national executive committee recently concluded that holding the World Cup would greatly benefit the African continent since more tournaments would equate to more possibilities for qualifying for African nations.
"As South African football, we considered this issue extensively, and in the end, the national executive of South African football resolved to support the World Cup biennially, for both men and women." So that's our stance," Safa president Danny Jordaan said during a recent press conference.
The national leadership of Safa also decided that Fifa should be urged to reconsider the rotation mechanism in order to avoid one or two continents monopolizing the hosting of Fifa World Cup events. Historically, the global spectacle has been limited to Europe and South Americans.
