Remembering the Pirates and Chiefs player who shot himself.
African Wanderers, now a forgotten team. It produced one of the deadliest trio of forwards to ever play the game; Siyabonga 'Bhele' Nomvethe, Sibusiso 'Rhee' Zuma and Phumlani 'BMX' Mkhize.
The trio went to joins Soweto giants, Phumlani Mkhize went to join Orlando Pirates in the 1999/2000 season. He was seen as the mostly likely to succeed among the trio. Mkhize left Orlando Pirates for Kaizer in the year 2001.
In April 2003 after a training session with Kaizer Chiefs he went home and just decided to take out a gun from the safe.
"Up to this day I am not sure what I was thinking. I tried to cock it in the way that the guys do it on TV, then I decided to clean it but I shot myself in the trendon".
"The doctors said my trendon was damaged and advised me to stop playing but then I decided that as a warrior I would fight on. I had an operation on my calf, but I was never the same afterwards. The truth is that I never fully recovered because my leg never stopped giving me problems".
His career then took a bizarre end when he went to play for Hellenic, his statistics were never the same. A promising player career ended too soon.
