After making a surprising move to Kaizer Chiefs about three seasons ago, he has had a lot of pressure on his shoulders. Unfortunately, Leonardo Castro hasn’t hit his best Chiefs, which is a worry since they require a goal poacher. Castro won the hearts of many fans during his dream run at Mamelodi Sundowns whereby he won numerous trophies. One thing that has affected the Colombian international is injuries and that has messed with his form. This has led the Chiefs head coach Stuart Baxter to be cautious about him, after making his return to the squad.
Following a long-term injury that required him to be on the sidelines for the start of the 2021/22 season. However, he made his anticipated return for Amakhosi against Maritzburg United, as the Soweto giants walked away with a 1-0 victory. Even though he came in the second half, Baxter is excited to have more options in his attack at Naturena. Castro’s return will mean that Chiefs have a number nine that they were lacking for the past couple of games. Now, the technical team can come up with different formations since they have a natural number nine.
Baxter is pleased to see Castro back in the squad and fighting for his position at Naturena. However, the Briton has decided to not risk losing him to another injury as he’s an important player in their strikers’ department. Now, Baxter has worked on a plan to give him about ten minutes per match until he’s fully ready to start a game. At the moment, Baxter wants him to work on his recovery, as he’s needed to score goals for Amakhosi. “It’s nice to see Leo Castro back on the field. He’s not ready by a long way yet, but I am hoping to give him 10 minutes, 10 minutes, 10 minutes and see how quickly we can get him back,” said Baxter talking to the Chiefs media department.
