Orlando Pirates struggle to beat the championship side Uthongathi FC 1-0 in another dull performance from the Pirates. The win means that Orlando Pirates qualify for round 16 of the Nedbank Cup. This is the first time that Orlando Pirates face Uthongathi FC in any competition.
Pirates should have prepared better considering that Uthongathi FC missed the chance to be promoted to PSL in promotional playoffs last year, so Uthongathi FC is no pushovers. This season they are in the sixth position and just three points behind the championship leaders Sekhukhune United.
However, today's 1-0 win will be considered as an improvement for the Pirates who were knocked out last year in round 32 by Bidvest Wits through a penalty shootout. Uthongathi FC was also eliminated on the same stage when they were knocked out by Highlands Park. But this time around they put a spirited performance throughout the first half where they managed to keep pirates at bay.
Pirates also struggled in the second half until on 64th minutes when Gabadinho Mhango buried them with a sublime shot. He was then substituted 6 minutes later by Kabelo Dlamini, but the Pirates struggled to add on a second goal. Uthongathi FC tried to rally their troops in the dying minutes of the match but couldn't find an equalizer.
