Similar coaching waters for the Pirates and Chiefs

Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, two Soweto giant's, have made different choices about their respective coaching positions for the next season.

Spanish strategist Jose Riveiro was named the new head coach of the Buccaneers by the Pirates on Saturday.

Riveiro's hiring raised concerns because he was an unknown and an unexpected pick given that he had only ever served as head coach once, at FC Inter Turku in Finland.

After working with the Celta Vigo junior team, he was an assistant coach at three additional Finnish clubs before taking over FC Inter: HJK Helsinki, PK-35, and FC Honka.

He twice won the league while working as an assistant for Helsinki, and he finished second two years in a row as FC Inter's manager.

He was born in Vigo and only played for Gran Pena in the Spanish third division, admitting that he wasn't a very good player. As a result, he entered coaching at a young age, beginning in the lower divisions of his native country before eventually relocating further north to Finland.

He takes over after the team tried out Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids' temporary co-coaching setup last season.

Davids has now departed the team, and Ncikazi will now work alongside Sergio Almenara as an assistant.

Since Ruud Krol served the entirety of his three-year contract before departing in 2011, the Pirates have gone on to feature Julio Leal, Augusto Palacios, Roger de Sa, Eric Tinkler, Vladimir Vermezovic, Tinkler again, Muhsin Ertugral, Palacios again, Kjell Jonevret, Milutin Sredojevic, Rulani Mokwena, Josef Zinnbauer, then Ncikazi and Davids

Similar to the Chiefs, the Pirates have changed their head coach a third time in as many years after going from Zinnbauer to Ncikazi, Davids, and most recently Riveiro.

Arthur Zwane will serve as the Chiefs' manager this season after Stuart Baxter did so last term and Gavin Hunt did so the season before that.

Zwane, like Riveiro, lacks PSL head coaching experience, but he is familiar with the league and his club because he spent 22 years as a player and coach at Chiefs.

Since 2010, Amakhosi has also undergone an equal number of coaching changes.

When VV was fired in April 2012, he had just a few months left to complete his three-year tenure. Aces Khuse and Doctor Khumalo then took over, followed by Baxter, Steve Komphela, Patrick Mabedi, Giovanni Solinas, Ernst Middendorp, Hunt, Zwane, and Sheppard, before Baxter was replaced by Zwane.
