Sundowns explains the Maluleka's situation – “He has lost so much weight”

When George Maluleka left Kaizer Chiefs in 2020 to join Mamelodi Sundowns that angered a lot of fans, as they felt that he could have waited until the season ended. However, he moved during the strict lockdown measures, when the Premier Soccer League had to be paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some fans even blamed him for Chiefs fumbling to win the 2019/20 league title after being on pole position for 13 months. Nevertheless, Maluleka had to follow his heart as he was headhunted by the now-former Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane to join his squad.

Little did he know that he will struggle to get game time at Sundowns, as he was barely seen on the matchday squad. Even though he left Chiefs whereby he has played regularly and now he has become a bench warmer. With all the criticism that Downs has been getting for messing with players' talents by not fielding them, now, the Tshwane giant’s co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has commented on Mido’s situation at Chloorkop. The 32-year-old midfielder is yet to play a match this season thus far, due to the immense competition at Sundowns.

Mngqithi said that within Sundowns' set up there have been numerous players that struggled to make it to the starting eleven. It’s not only Maluleka who hasn’t got game time at Chloorkop. As their aim is not to mess with the team as they’ve found their winning combinations. Mngqithi has stated that Mido has lost weight as he has been working hard during training sessions. Also, he has shown the hunger to contribute at Downs, surely as time goes by they’ll allow him to showcase his talents. “We have players who are outside that never played. George is one player that has done exceptionally well. If you can see him now, he has lost so much weight. He looks very sharp and we [are] eager to give him an opportunity at some point. We must try to see what we can do, without tampering with the winning combination,” said Mngqithi talking to the media.
