Ex-Pirates player nabbed for alleged armed robberies.
Date: Thursday, 18 November
Being a footballer brings fame and makes one's name known to the public and if you play for a top club in the PSL like Orlando Pirates, you not easily forgotten. It has come to light that one former player of Orlando Pirates Patrick Phungwayo was one of two suspects identified by the police this week in Lombardy East for a string of alleged armed robberies.
The former Bucs player and the other suspect is set to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court today. The Hawks issued a statement on the matter, "This afternoon, the Hawks' Tactical Operational Management Section with Crime Intelligence, Tracker Connect, Badboyz Security, Ekurhuleni District Zone Opts Team, GTP Saturation, Insurance Crime Bureau, Vision Tactical Security and BSG Security arrested two suspects aged 33 and 46 in Lombardy East for a string of armed robberies. They will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court soon", the Hawks confirmed.
"The team received information about a gang of armed men using an Audi during hijackings and home invasions in Gauteng suburbs. They proceeded to Lombardy East where the gang was spotted. Police intercepted them when they entered residential premises and were immediately apprehended".
"Three firearms, housebreaking implements, gloves, balaclavas and a stolen television set as well as cellphones were found inside the vehicle. The Audi had false registration plates and was robbed in Bramley earlier this year. A Kia Picanto was also found in the same premises and it also had false registration plates positively identified as robbed from the owner in Linden in June".
The two suspects was linked by preliminary investigation to a number of hijackings and armed robberies, and the suspects might not be the only two involved in the crimes as the possibility of arresting more suspects can't be ruled out.
The Siya Crew wanted to get word from Phungwayo himself on the matter, but couldn't get hold of the former Pirates player for comment.
