Sundowns coach breaks his silence about Onyango following criticism about his goalkeeping skills

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena has shared his take on what transpired at Loftus Versfeld. As Sundowns conceded for the first time in the DStv Premiership after ten games. This was a dream start for the Brazilians, but their streak of conceding goals was ended by their archrivals SuperSport United. As the Tshwane Derby ended in a 2-2 draw and left a bitter taste on Sundowns fans as they couldn’t believe that their veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango conceded two goals. It was a tough day for Onyango as he had to fetch the ball at the back of the net twice, which is rare according to his standards. As he wants to break records and also, create new ones for his fellow goalkeepers.

Even though the Ugandan international has been on his best form at Sundowns, but there’s always room for mistakes, according to Mokwena. Looking at his performance against SuperSport, Mokwena felt that he did his best and he cannot be crucified for that, since goalkeepers constantly make mistakes. It’s just that their mistakes are highlighted as they’re the last line of defence, hence, if they concede a goal then their technicalities are questioned. “Look, football is a game of mistakes. The good thing is you and I never played in goals. We don’t have the benefit of that experience. Part of being a goalkeeper is that your mistakes might be more costly than some of the other mistakes on the pitch,” said Mokwena talking to the media.

On top of that Mokwena stated that the 36-year-old Downs skipper is a superb goalkeeper and that cannot be taken away from him, despite having challenges against Matsatsantsa. All they will have to do as Brazilians are to improve their mistakes. “But the reality is Denis is Denis. He is a top goalkeeper. As they say, one swallow doesn’t make a summer. He’s got our support. We will show the corrections and analyse the game,” said Mokwena talking to the media.
