Opinion: How Thomas Tuchel used 3 different formations against Watford

When Watford and Chelsea met at Vicarage Road on Wednesday night, things almost didn't go as planned. Chelsea's trip to Watford to face Thomas Tuchel's side was supposed to be a walk in the park, but it was anything but for the Premier League leaders.

Watford gave the Blues a good fight and they had to work hard to get the win. In addition to Chelsea's difficulties, Thomas Tuchel had to change his formation three times during the game.

3-4-3 formation was used by the German coach at the start of the game. In the back three, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Trevor Chalobah were paired up with Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Saul Niguez, while Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta formed the Wing-back pairing. Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic supported Kai Havertz as he charged into the fray.

Both Chelsea and their hosts scored in the first half, but Thomas Tuchel responded in the second half by substituting Saul Niguez, who appeared to be out of place in the first period. Thiago Silva was brought in to replace the Spaniard midfielder and this necessitated a change in formation. The Blues went from a 3-4-3 system to a 3-5-2 system.

While Trevor Chalobah shifted to the midfield, Thiago Silva was inserted into the back three alongside Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger. Christian Pulisic and Kai Havertz were left in the lead after Mason Mount sank further back.

It was Edouard Mendy, not Trevor Chalobah, who thwarted Watford's counterattack by charging at incoming Cleverly outside Chelsea's penalty area. Once again, a formation change was necessitated by the withdrawal of Chalobah and the substitution of Hakim Ziyech.

Reverting to the 3-4-3 formation with Chalobah out, Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic remained in the attack as the formation remained unchanged.

Cesar Azpilicueta was substituted for Romelu Lukaku by Thomas Tuchel at the end of the game. Christian Pulisic was shifted to the right wingback position, leaving Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz, and Romelu Lukaku in front of the back four.
