Mercedes Champions to retire from Formula E in 2022

Mercedes, which won the Formula E world championship last weekend, announced their retirement from the sport at the end of the 2022 season on Wednesday.

After a race around Berlin's ancient Tempelhof aerodrome on Sunday, Dutchman Nyck de Vries won the world title as his Mercedes team won the Constructors' Trophy.

Mercedes said in a statement that "As part of the new strategic direction, the brand has deliberately decided to shift resources for that accelerated electrification boom, including the development of three electric architectures that will be introduced in 2025.

"Mercedes will therefore re-allocate resources away from its world Formula E championship program to apply the lessons learned in competition to serial product development." "

Mercedes, who has participated since the 2019-2020 season in the Championship, is dedicating more of their energy to Formula One, in a battle with Red Bull for the title.

"For the future, the company will focus on Formula 1, which will strengthen the sport's status as the fastest laboratory to develop and prove sustainability and scalability in the future," added the statement. "
