Chiefs had pleaded with the high echelons of management in the PSL for a postponement of their four matches with at least 36 employees at their famed Naturena training village having caught the virus.
Although there are rules in place to deal with Chiefs' matter, there has been seeming reluctance from the PSL to make a decision, which has resulted in three resignations from some of the organization's integral officials.
Meanwhile, a high-profile lawyer, whose name remained undisclosed to avoid victimization, has made a suggestion to the PSL, and he couldn't have been blunter.
He indicated that the Glamour Boys have failed to adhere to the rules that the PSL had put in place way before Covid-19 began, as such the PSL ought to deal with this matter without any fear of contradiction.
He pointed out at the widely-referred incident involving the now-defunct Cape Umoya and Cape Town Spurs, which happened earlier this year, wherein the former had almost 50% of their squad beset by the virus and they pleaded with the PSL to postpone the fixture, a request which ironically fell on deaf ears.
"Right now, Chiefs haven’t complied with the rules. The trouble is that when Cape Umoya United couldn’t fulfill their fixture in similar circumstances the league gave the points to the opponents on the day. There is no provision that says if there are covid cases then you will not pitch for a match, so Chiefs are stuffed," the top lawyer told KickOff.com.
He went further to state that Chiefs should lose 6 points for their games against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows which they failed to honor.
This matter is quite a hot potato that requires sober minds to find a solution. In one's opinion, the PSL should grant Chiefs these postponements, or risk diminishing the integrity of the championship.
Of course, there are those saying the law must not be selective, similarly, the nature of the Covid-19 pandemic has been quite difficult to predict, which means rules have to be constantly amended as we go along.
What do you make of the top lawyer's comments? Do you think the Chiefs should lose 6 points?
