Barcelona hasn't been the same team for almost 2 years now. They have failed to inspire and with many players going out the exit door, things just seem to be getting worse. Last nights performance against Benfica proved how bad the team is currently playing and questions need to be answered.
This season has been unkind to Barcelona after their second 3-0 defeat to Benfica and Bayern Munich in the Champions League. They have failed to inspire and their performances are lackluster to say the least. They sit bottom of group E and things look to be going downhill fast. For the first time since 1997 Barcelona have lost 5 games straight in the Champions League having scored 2 goals and conceding 15 goals. In the league, things also look bad for the Catalans as they've only won 3 matches and sit 6th in log.
Barcelona without Messi is, if you’ve watched them over the last couple of years, exactly like you’d imagine Barcelona to be without Messi. They are definitely worse without Messi, but they won nothing last year with Messi. They haven’t reached the UCL finals since the departure of Xavi and Iniesta, who were just as important as Messi. Spain has not been the same without Xavi and Iniesta for years and you can see that translate to this Barca team who don't have leaders in the team anymore.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Xavi and Roberto Martinez are both on the shortlist as potential replacements for Koeman if things don't change in the foreseeable future. The team is winless in their last 5 games and have to face Atletico Madrid on Sunday in La Liga, who sit pretty at the top of the league. Former Barca players Suarez and Griezmann could inflict more pain and pressure on Ronald Koeman and his team.
Is getting rid of the coach the answer to Barca’s problems?
