[Opinion] Pirates aided by this in pursuit of Chiefs-linked striker?

Orlando Pirates could soon rival Kaizer Chiefs with the number of their incoming transfers after they confirmed the signing of Evidence Makgopa, Bienvenu Eva Nga, Miguel Timm and Azola Matrose.

The aforementioned signings by the Buccaneers are in addition to the capture of Nkosinathi Sibisi and Tapelo Xoki.

Pirates could have potentially one of the most exciting strikers as they are reportedly in negotiations with Royal AM over the transfer of forward Victor Letsoalo.

"Talks are ongoing for Victor Letsoalo to move to Pirates. There’s a big possibility for him to move judging by how talks are going between the two clubs," a source was quoted as saying by Soccer Laduma.

Letsoalo has been linked with Chiefs for the better part of last season as Thwihli Thwahla reportedly put a R20 million price tag on the Bafana Bafana striker.

The R20 million valuation for Letsoalo by Royal AM seemed to have scared Chiefs off, as head coach Arthur Zwane explained the difficulty in signing the former Bloemfontein Celtic attacker.

"Is Victor Letsoalo a type of player that can play for Chiefs? The answer is yes, but can we get him? Those are the challenges we're faced with," Zwane was quoted as saying by SowetanLive

However, the significantly high price tag by the KwaZulu-Natal side could have been exposed by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos after he gave reasons why he did not include Letsoalo in his squad to face Morocco in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

"I have followed Victor again, he is a scorer. But I saw also that, I think, he was scoring nine penalties [Ed’s note: Letsoalo has scored six penalties in the league this season]. So, if you take that off from his figures, he is not so good anymore for a striker,” Broos was quoted as saying by SABCSport.

"In the game, he is someone you forget and then he kicks and scores.

"He can do that here in the PSL but with us, we are not so good that we can say ‘Victor, wait until you have a chance.’ We are not strong enough, we need 11 guys on the field. That is the reason we didn’t take Victor," Broos explained.

Perhaps after Broos' comments, Royal AM did not see the need to overprice him anymore.

And another factor is that Chiefs seemingly looked for another alternative, as they reportedly splashed R10 million on the signing of Ashley Du Preez.

If Amakhosi were no longer interested in Letsoalo, coupled with a Bafana Bafana snub, Thwihli Thwahla may have been left with no choice but lower down the asking price, a scenario which seems to suit Pirates.
