Match-fixing in football isn’t something that can be taken likely as it put clubs into disrepute. Unfortunately, not every team gets to be exposed for doing what’s deemed illegal. As long as the people involved in a football match don’t talk about such inhumane behaviours then it will be swept under the carpet. At the same time, there has to be proof if anyone says something that will damage an organisation. As that will be useful in court when the issue is dissected in front of a judge or jury. The different associations in football have to put stricter rules with regards to match-fixing as that will make sure that the right team wins.
Now, the MTN8 champions Mamelodi Sundowns have been allegedly linked with a match-fixing incident. This follows after the former Bafana Bafana midfielder Peter Khoabane revealed some shocking allegations during his interview on a YouTube channel called TK Solutions TV. As he stated that when he was still part of Vaal Professionals, he accepted a bribe for his role in match-fixing in a game against Sundowns during the 1998/99 Premiership season. According to Khoabane, the Brazilians were running for the league title and they needed extra help. At that time Vaal Professionals were set to be relegated from the top-flight league. He stated that he had to make sure that the bribe was still happening during the half-time. As both teams went to the break goalless. However, things changed in the second half as Downs netted three goals to win the match. Then Sundowns went to win the league title on goal difference, which left Kaizer Chiefs with painful hearts.
Now, Masandawana has responded to these horrible allegations as they’ve stated this occurred approximately four years before Dr. Patrice Motsepe bought the club. However, they will investigate the matter further and get to the bottom of it. At the same time, Downs stated that they’ve been doing everything by the book and they’ve never partaken in match-fixing. Also, this matter will have to go through their legal team. “Mamelodi Sundowns has always adhered to the FIFA, CAF, SAFA, and PSL Rules and Regulations. The club has always been committed to governance & ethics and football global best practice. We view the allegation in a very serious light and we are investigating the matter and will also seek legal advice,” read the Sundowns official statement.
