Victor Gomez's refereeing has left many football loving people around the continent unhappy once again. In the 2019 edition's final, Gomez was criticised for the way he handled that match.
This time around criticism found him after he officiated in yet another encounter between Ivory Coast and Algeria in the current edition of Afcon that is underway in Cameroon. But not every fan was baying for his blood on social media, many others praised him for his fearlessness.
The hotly contested must win match between the Elephants and the Fennec Foxes ended with a 3-1 scoreline in favour of Cote de' Voir. The north Africans were kicked out of the tournament after they failed to win Group E.
People who watched the game had different opinions afterwards, with many thinking that Gomez should not handle games of Afcon's magnitude. But others stood by him and congratulated him for the way he handled the match. Below is the few reactions from disgrunted fans of football.
@straightmarvin said: "Victor Gomes embarrassing South Africa. That was not a penalty."
@Muroa_jnr: "The way Algerians are trying so hard to bully Victor Gomes."
Sibusiso Mthombeni said: "When he's on CAF assignments he's brilliant, he does get overzealous and gets carried away when he's officiating PSL games, though..."
Christopher Blakk said: "Hate him all you want, but Mr Gomes is the best in Africa. Never intimidated, never threatened, never influenced and never afraid. Mr No-Nonsense for a reason."
Vusi Khumalo said: "He didn't disappoint, dishing out those yellows in the first 14 mins of the game and a penalty later on. They were really testing his patience. I love the way he officiates. Our best who sometimes adds his nice flavour in the beautiful game."
Algeria needed a victory after registering just a single point from their opening two encounters.
