Pitso Mosimane knew that coaching outside of South Africa wouldn’t be all glitz and glamour, as it will come with its challenges. After a dream first season at Al Ahly, as he was able to clinch four trophies in a short period, he set the bar very high. Mosimane is on his second season with Ahly and a lot is expected from the side, as they’re known for dominating African football. However, this time around things didn’t go according to plan as Mosimane’s men lost to Tala’ea El-Gaish on penalties in the Egyptian Super Cup.
This was supposed to be Mosimane’s fifth trophy with the Club of the Century, unfortunately, that was ruined by El-Gaish who showed a lot of hunger to win the silverware. Coming into this match, both teams had a four-week break, hence the first half didn’t have a lot of scoring opportunities. After Ahly lost the Egyptian Premier League to Zamalek SC in the 2020/21 season, things didn’t sit well with their massive fan base and even management. Hence there was hope that that they’ll get to win the Egyptian Super Cup, which didn’t occur. Both Ahly and El-Gaish failed to score in the regulation time, even the extra-time that’s when the game went to the penalties. Mosimane’s men couldn’t find the target, thanks to El-Gaish's shot-stopper who saved their three spot-kicks.
Now, it has been reported that Al Ahly players, coaching staff, and director of football will have to cough out 300 000 Egyptian pounds (R282 897) for losing their crucial final against El-Gaish. According to FarPost on their social media platforms the Red Devil boss Mahmoud El Khatid didn’t take the loss pretty well as they were all about winning and cleaning up trophies. Hence he came up with the fine to make sure that Ahly doesn’t find itself in this compromising position again.
“HUGE FINE!!! Al Ahly boss Mahmoud El-Khatib has imposed a 300 000 Egyptian pounds (R282 897) fine on each Al Ahly player, director of football, and the coaching staff. This comes after Al Ahly lost the coaching staff. This comes after Al Ahly lost the Egyptian Super Cup to El-Gaish on penalties last night,” said FarPost on their official Twitter page.
