Former Orlando Pirates defender linked with a move back to his former club

The media has speculated that Chippa United are keen on bringing their former captain, Diamond Thopola, back to the club.

The 31-year-old spent three years on the books of the Chilli Boys, where he wore the captain’s armband, before making a switch to Orlando Pirates in 2018.

Since signing for Bucs, however, his career has not lived up to expectations and he did return to Chippa for a loan spell.

Following his exit from Pirates by mutual consent at the end of the 2020/21 season, the right back spent the 2021/22 season with Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (now Marumo Gallants), where he made 10 appearances in all competitions, playing second fiddle to the youthful Nicholus Lukhubeni, who was the preferred defensive option.

Now, following the expiry of his one-year deal with the Polokwane-based outfit, the crew has gathered that Chippa coach Gavin Hunt is looking at roping in the experienced campaigner for a third stint with the club.

Hunt is no stranger to calling on experience when the chips are down, as seen at his former clubs Bidvest Wits and Kaizer Chiefs, and he is believed to be an admirer of Thopola, who can play at either right back or as a right-sided centre-back.

Given his free agent status, Thopola is unaffected by the transfer window that slammed shut at the end of August and would be able to put pen to paper Gqeberha.

It now remains to be seen if talks between the club and the player’s camp result in a return to the club where he cut his teeth in the country’s topflight.
