Akpeyi's Kaizer Chiefs contract renewal under review after Soweto Derby howler

Kaizer Chiefs may count themselves lucky after they rose like a phoenix from the ashes and defeated bitter rivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby on Saturday afternoon.

Even though Chiefs won the match courtesy of a controversial penalty, it was a tough match that could have gone either way.

One person who heaved a sigh of relief when Keagan Dolly converted the spot kick is goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi

Akpeyi had gifted Pirates with an equalizer minutes before the spot kick was awarded.

It's not clear if he had intended to stop the PSL bound shot or he wanted to parry it to safety.

This comes just days before Chiefs are set to deliberate on his contract.

Akpeyi is nearing the end of his contract with the Glamour Boys, after the club confirmed extending his deal in January last year to June 2022.

Akpeyi managed to dislodge goalie Itumeleng Khune from the number one slot.

A source that spoke to Soccer Laduma confirmed that Chiefs were lucky to hand him a two year contract extension.

“Daniel Akpeyi is likely to get a new contract at Kaizer Chiefs. The player’s representatives are set to meet with the club to discuss a new deal,” said a source.

Akpeyi had already attracted interest from Saudi Arabia.
