Playing professional football is undoubtedly one of the many ways a person can make millions but contrary to popular belief not all footballers remain wealth upon retirement. Players tend to forget about the real value of money and also fail to make wise decisions like investing for rainy days.
Robert Kiyosaki, the author of Rich Dad Poor Dad once said, "money is power, financial literacy is powerful", which means that one can be able to maintain or grow their financial wealth. Often we have heard about inspiring rags to riches stories but barely are we reminded that we can also be a rags to riches and back to the rags again.
It is very much known that most elite footballers are known for their lavish lifestyle and driving around in big engines, by big engines I mean high end cars. In South Africa we have had some of the best footballers of our times and some have since went to lose it all post retirement.
In South Africa we have had some of the best foreign strikers to ever feature in the top tier league. We cannot begin to name a few without the mentioning of Gilbert Mushangadzike. Like most Zimbabwean footballers he began his football career in his native country before jetting off to enjoy successful spells in Germany, South Africa, Swaziland and in China.
It is without a doubt that his most successful spell was in South Africa where he went to feature for Manning Rangers, Orlando Pirates and Mpumalanga Black Aces. Having enjoyed a football career spanning for over two decades, money was not an object to him.
Post retirement there has since been reports that the one time top footballer is currently going through financial struggles. During his playing days like most footballers Mushangadzike drove around in luxury. According to information obtained he now resides in Mbare, Zimbabwe. According to reports he is now a pale shadow of his former self. It is believed that he went broke as a result of over spending.
