”Kaizer Chiefs is doing fine without Khune,” said the former Sundowns goalkeeper

Kaizer Chiefs veteran shot-stopper Itumeleng Khune has found it difficult to get game time in the 2021/22 season. As it looks like he has fallen out of favour at Naturena and the former Mamelodi Sundowns retired goalkeeper Ronnie Kanalelo believes that the Soweto giants are “doing fine” without him at the moment.

Kanalelo stated that the Phefeni Glamour Boys have been able to get the required results in the past couple of games without the services of Khune. This means that Amakhosi have moved past the Khune era as they’re more invested in the future and this is visible as the likes of Brandon Petersen and Bruce Bvuma are seen on the bench. “As things stand Chiefs is doing fine without him and we don’t know if he still has it to play for Chiefs. I would not want to get past with going on about what Itu did some 10 or 15 years ago when he started coming through to take over at Chiefs and in the national team,” said Kanalelo speaking to the media.

Furthermore, Kanalelo stated that in Khune’s absence Daniel Akpeyi has owned his role at Chiefs. Hence at the moment, the Nigerian shot-stopper has been used by Stuart Baxter as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. As he’s able to get the job done, and his performances in the DStv Premiership has influenced Amakhosi to be in the second position. Without turning a blind eye on Itu’s past heydays at Naturena, it showed that he’s an exceptional goalkeeper, however, Kanalelo feels that he will have to cut his losses and move to another club. “Akpeyi is of a quiet nature in his game, so he is not flamboyant and popular but then what matters is that he gets the job done. Itu can still [play] another four or five years, but the question is that does he still want to play those years at another club,” said Kanalelo speaking to the media.
