Mamelodi Sundowns was held to a 2-2 draw in the CAF Champions league second round of the preliminaries by a brave Maniema Union side who kept the score level in the first-leg at home.
Mamelodi Sundowns played away from home to Maniema Union in the CAF Champions league second round of the preliminaries. Maniema Union had the home ground advantage in the first-leg fixture and made perfect use of it as they held Mamelodi Sundowns to a 2-2 draw. Maniema Union was very brave but now has to deal with Mamelodi Sundowns next at Sundowns home ground in the second-leg.
Mamelodi Sundowns is not an easy opponent to beat at home, and Maniema Union will have to give it their all to defeat the South African champions. Mamelodi Sundowns was amazing when they opened the scoring in as early as the 9th minute when Themba Zwane found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Mamelodi Sundowns unfortunately could not defend as well as they do in the Dstv Premiership, as Maniema Union replied with an equaliser in the 45th minute as the score sat level on 1-1 at the half-time break. Themba Zwane got back to the attack and reclaimed the lead for Mamelodi Sundowns when he scored his second goal in the late 84th minute for the 2-1 lead.
Mamelodi Sundowns made an defensive error once again and allowed Maniema Union to level again as they scored in the 88th minute for a 2-2 draw. The time ran out and the match ended 2-2 after the full-time whistle. The score remain level and the second-leg will determine who will go through to the next round in the CAF Champions league, but Mamelodi Sundowns will have the home ground advantage, so it will not be an easy mission for Maniema Union. The second-leg will be played on October 24.
