Le Roy believes Africa should have more Ballon dOr nominees

What does veteran French mentor Claude Le Roy say about the Ballon D'Or awards? Player down!

French veteran Claude Le Roy has worked in Africa for the past 36 years and is one of the most lauded strategists the landmass has ever seen. A former Africa Cup of Nations winner with Cameroon has never gained a foothold at the COSAFA resort but he knows everything about African football and is optimistic about the game's upward trend. Most recently he spent five years with Togo, most recently he also worked for Senegal, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Ghana, which he topped 14th in the FIFA world rankings in 2008.

"The normal level of African football works steadily," LeRoy told the COSAFA Show. "Also, the results are acceptable when you have a mentor who has been in charge of a public group for a long time, similar to what we are seeing now in Senegal and Algeria.

He has communicated the uncomfortable disappointment of the two main African actors Mo Salah from Egypt and Riyad Mahrez from Algeria were nominated as candidates for this year's FIFA Ballon d'Or and he says this is the process a mild Africa has to persevere with.

"What we need for African football is several players who for the Ballon d'Or. O. The moment you see, for example, that Chelsea goalkeeper [Edouard] Mendy is not in the top 30 best players in the world. It seems unfathomable.

"The way the world looks at Africa is still insufficient. When Europeans visit Africa, they don't remember that the top three goalscorers in the English Premier League in 201819 were. The season was on the mainland. Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and [PierreEmerick] Aubameyang, and it is, as many say, the best title in the world. How can you not perceive the level of African football that way?

". We definitely have to move up in the World Cup and have a group that makes it to the knockout round, but that happens. The level of football in Africa is certainly evolving every year.

In this scene, too, we hear mentor Bafana Hugo Broos and the mentors who led their groups at the last COSAFA 2021 Women's Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay.
