Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has inherited an ageing squad and a transfer ban has made the situation worse, although he has been boosted by some youngster raising their hands in the first team.
The likes of Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Happy Mashiane, Njabulo Blom and Darrel Matsheke have given Hunt some options in a relatively thin squad, that somehow finished second in the DStv Premiership last season.
The Covid-19 pandemic has given all teams selecion headaches, with some players having to be out for a while after testing positive and the likelihood of injuries is more this season, as there was no pre-season training.
Chiefs have been the worst hit by these circumstances given their transfer ban that lasted for two consecutive windows and Hunt has had to shuffle his players around.
With centre-back Eric Mathoho out for a long time in the early stages of the season, the former Bidvest Wits coach made made some positional changes, shifting Anthony Akumu from defensive midfield to centre-back.
The Kenyan has had relative success in that role, with Daniel Cardoso moving the opposite direction from centre-back to midfield. Ramahlwe Mphahlele, who has been named as the new captain, was also switched from right-back to centre-back.
The other Chiefs player who went through some positional change under Hunt is Philani Zulu, who has been shifted from winger and midfield to left-back.
Zulu has given Amakhosi some stability at left-back, a position that has been problematic, with Yagan Sasman completely left out of the line-up after playing that role under former coach Ernst Middendorp.
In Zulu's absence, Reeve Frosler is even preferred over Sasman, as he had a stellar game against SuperSport United over the weekend, where he cut inside from the right side of the box to score a stunning goal off the far post.
Bernard Parker is the latest player to be moved into a new position for now, as he had a great game in midfield against Matsatsantsa.
Bernard Parker was man of the match," Hunt told Chiefs media after the match, according to Goal.
"We played him in central midfield because we don't really have anyone. We played him there and he was fantastic, he was really good," Hunt added.
Parker has been criticised for his goal-scoring drought but he has been moved around quite often, as he played mostly as an impact player and as left wing-back under Middendorp.
Do you think these positional changes have benefitted Chiefs?
