Opinion - Chiefs have to follow this Sundowns lead to complete squad?

Kaizer Chiefs have made a big statement with their recent signings and have created an anticipation of how the squad will gel ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Former Chiefs defender Dominic Isaacs complimented the club for their recent acquisitions, as he critiqued the likes of Siyethemba Sithebe and Ashley Du Preez and praised the signing of Dillan Solomons, Kamohelo Mahlatsi and George Matlou.

Isaacs gave insight into the little known Matlou, whom he coached at Cape Umoya United.

"George Matlou I was coaching him at Cape Umoya, what a fantastic player," Isaacs told Kickoff.

"I was playing him in the number 10 position, what a very brave player with a very, very big heart. He plays every game like it's his last game, I was very happy when Swallows signed him.

"Not forgetting he also comes from Dillon Sheppard at Wits' Diski team. So I think the main guy behind everything is Dillon Sheppard. I'm telling you he will be in the Bafana team in the next six months," he said.

Isaacs went on to suggest that Chiefs should add centre-back Idumba Fasika from Cape Town City to complete their signings.

Although Amakhosi have made great signings that also includes the likes of Yusuf Maart, they have only signed one defender so far, Zitha Kwinika, who has returned to the club.

The Glamour Boys have not yet solidified their centre-back area and could be looking at following Mamelodi Sundowns' tactical strategy of having left-footed centre-backs in the team.

The Naturena-based side addressed their shortcoming of not having a left-footed centre-back by signing Thabani Dube before the start of last season but Dube played a handful of matches under former coach Stuart Baxter and even when Arthur Zwane took over on a caretaker basis.

Chiefs seem to still be in the market for a left-footed centre-back, as they are linked with Cape Town Spurs' Rushwin Dortley, who has also reportedly attracted interest from Sundowns.

Amakhosi have reportedly tabled R3 million for the highly-rated R20 year old but Spurs are yet to agree on his sale, as they are looking to sell him to an overseas team.

Sundowns are an accomplished side but they still view their left-sided centre-back vulnerable, especially after the injury of Mosa Lebusa and are reportedly tracking Moroccan defender Abdelmounaim Boutouil, who was on loan at Raja Casablanca.

Chiefs have also reportedly launched a bid for the Citizens' left-back Terrence Mashego.

A quality left-sided defender is a scarce resource, something that may explain why Amakhosi are yet to sign one and like Sundowns venturing around the continent in that respect, the Glamour Boys may have to scout outside of the country to fill their left-sided centre-back area, if they can't get Dortley or Mashego.
