Kaizer Chiefs Legend Itumeleng Khune Set To End 158-Day Drought

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune will end his 158-day football fast on Sunday 22 January 2022.

In fact, Khune would not have played competitive football 160 days ago on Sunday but today, Thursday 20 January 2022, is 158 days since he kicked the ball.

The last time Khune kicked the ball in competitive play was when he faced Mamelodi Sundowns for the kaizer chiefs in the MTN8 Quarterfinals.

And that was on August 15, 2021, when the Chiefs, despite a dashing second-half display, lost by two goals and went 2-2 up in extra time to Sundowns on penalties.

Khune, 34, has been Amakhosis' number one since making his debut in 2007 but has slumped in the rankings in recent seasons.

And that's because of the injury he suffered a few seasons ago - since then he's no longer the same in the eyes of many football fans.

Now it seems that there are still people who believe in Khune as a goalkeeper, so he was included in the Warriors starting XI for the DStv Compact Cup semi-final against Amabutho.

It's fair to say that if Khune's performance in the DStv Compact Cup is anything but impressive, it's likely he'll reclaim first place with the Chiefs.

Otherwise, however, Daniel Akpei, who is at AFCON 2021 with Nigeria, could keep him while Brandon Peterson continues to learn the ropes as Amakhosi No. 2.
