PSL: Disappointing News For Orlando Pirates & Kaizer Chiefs After This Was Confirmed Eariler Today

Soweto Giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have fallen far behind their rivals Mamelodi Sundowns. This is in terms of success, this is evident as a result of the recent announcement of the nominees for different individual accolades, for the soon ending campaign.

None of the players from both clubs were nominated for the best player of the season awards. The last player to have such honours was Thembinkosi Lorch who went on to claim the best player of the season. This season it is very different and poor for the giants.

The only exception is that of Orlando Pirates', Kwameh Peprah. The Ghanaian international has been nominated for the young player of the season. That is what I would regard as merely a consolation nomination for the buccaneers.

The dominance of Mamelodi Sundowns is evident by having two players going head to head for the biggest awards for the PSL campaign, the duo of Peter Shalulile and Andile Jali.

Pirates and Chiefs should definitely put in more effort in challenging and providing competition for league champions, Sundowns.

Yes, some might point to the fact that Sundowns has more money, but money does not buy everything especially success in football. We have witnessed that from the likes of Paris Saint German and English powerhouses Manchester City.

Both clubs have invested insane amount of money in buying the finest talent in the world but, they are yet to taste success at European level. This means that even Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs can battle with Sundowns even when there is economic imbalance.

The times where Sundowns faced real competition was in the 2017-2018 PSL season. Sundowns won the league by only five points difference from second placed Orlando Pirates.

The respective teams would again provide us a mouthwatering title race, in the following season 2018-2019. Sundowns defended their crown as Pirates placed second with 57 points to Sundowns' 59.

Then the time where we all thought Sundowns league's dominance would eventually end was in 2019-2020. Chiefs occupied number one spot from matchday 8, only for them to surrender the top spot on final matchday as Sundowns successfully defended their crown yet again.

Mamelodi Sundowns is on course to claim a domestic trebble this campaign. They have already won, the league and the MTN 8 Cup. The only missing piece is the Nedbank Cup where they will meet Marumo Gallants in the final.
