Al Ahly gains momentum in the manager search

Following Pitso Mosimane's departure two weeks ago, Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly has gained a tremendous boost in their search for their next manager.

After 21 months in charge, the Red Devils fired their former head coach on June 13.

Although the decision to fire the South African manager is claimed to have been mutually agreed upon when he requested to be fired, Mosimane had only recently signed a new contract with the Cairo team, so it still came as a surprise.

The 10-time CAF Champions League champions were believed to have found a replacement for the 57-year-old, and personal conditions were reportedly worked out with Portuguese manager Ricardo Soares.

Soares has since resigned as the head coach of Portugal's top division team Gil Vicente, along with four other members of his coaching staff, Mauricio Vaz, Raul Faria, Pedro Lobo, and Pedro Guimaraes, it has been verified in a statement made on Tuesday.

Soares will soon be named Al Ahly's new manager, signing a two-year deal worth €1.5 million (R25 million) per season, according to KingFut.

The 47-year-old allegedly paid his own release clause, estimated to be worth €250 000 (R4.2 million), in order to leave the Barcelos club.
