I Don't Give Presents: Broos On Why He Did Not Select Lakay and Coetzee

After Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos left out Mamelodi Sundowns left back Layle Lakay when he announce his 23 men squad that will play two World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia, South African soccer fans were left unhappy, especially those who support Sundowns, they feel the national team coach is being unjust by not including this man in the squad.

The Bafana Bafana coach has provided an explanation and revealed the main reasons why he has never selected the former Cape Town City defender and his team mate Rivaldo Coetzee.

According to reports, the 67 year old Belgian says it is not yet the right time to elect Coetzee and Lakay despite being quality players, he reportedly said he doesn’t hand out Bafana call-ups just because the person has a certain name or plays for a certain team.

It is also reported that he says he he needed more experienced players for the the two important games since they mean a lot, which is why he opted for an experienced Kaizer Chiefs defender Sifiso Hlanti.

"I can only select 23 players, I know that those are good, but it is not the right moment to select them. I do not give presents. It is not because your name is Mr this that you will be in Bafana. It doesn’t count with me. I tried to select the strongest team possible. These are difficult games (against Ethiopia) and I think I also need a bit more experience in the team. You see that with Hlanti," he said.

Bafana Bafana takes on Ethiopia on two back-to-back games which will be played on the 6th and the 10th October 2021 respectively, should they manage to win these games they will have stretched the lead and remain on pole position to can qualify for the World Cup 2022 which will be played in Qatar.
