OPINION: Why Chelsea need to withdraw from Tchouameni race, despite being favourites

Clubs are starting to look at their main targets as the January transfer window approaches, and a number of names have already made headlines. Aurélien Tchouameni, an AS Monaco midfielder, is one of such names.

Some of Europe's major teams are showing an interest in the 21-year-old. Real Madrid, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Juventus are all interested in signing him, but Chelsea are now at the top of the list.

Chelsea are so close to signing Tchouameni that they just must recognize they must withdraw since he is clearly not needed. If you look at Chelsea's midfield alternatives, you'll notice that they have more than enough.

Tuchel employs a 3-4-3 formation that can only hold two central midfielders at a time. For those two spots, the German already has four solid choices and two borderline players. Adding another midfielder is simply unnecessary at this time.

In midfield, Jorginho and Kovacic are excellent options, with Ngolo Kante and Ruben Loftus-Cheek as back-ups. Ross Barkley and Saul Niguez are also on the outskirts of the starting lineup. Billy Gilmour and Conor Gallagher are two exceptional musicians who are now on loan with the New York Yankees. These guys have made a good living for themselves.

I'm not sure what the club is still trying to accomplish with Tchouameni. Even if they require a quality upgrade, they should consider selling some of these guys to make room for newcomers. Tchouameni, on the other hand, does not appear to be of higher quality than Ruben Loftus-cheek, who is not even a regular starter at the present.

Tchouameni is currently valued at 50 million euros, and Chelsea can afford him. Purchasing Tchouameni, on the other hand, is equivalent to throwing money into the sea. They could lose two good defenders for free this summer, and then they go out and buy a player they don't need.

Nobody seems to mind that Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have yet to sign new contracts. They will depart Chelsea as free agents in the summer if the situation does not improve. Chelsea must either make hefty bids for these players or find suitable alternatives. It's not the right moment to get another Bakayoko right now.
