Reason Why Chesea's Mendy Was Snubbed For Yashin Trophy {Opinion}

In a statement released on Monday, former Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra claimed that France Football's decision not to give Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy the Yashin Trophy for 2021 at the Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris was motivated by racial prejudice.

In spite of winning the Champions League and putting in outstanding performances for Thomas Tuchel's club last season, Mendy was edged out for the award by Gianluigi Donnarumma of Paris Saint-Germain, according to the DAILY POST.

The Senegalese international finished second behind Donnarumma, who was instrumental in Italy's Euro 2020 victory, with Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak taking third place.

Following the incident, Evra appeared to suggest in an Instagram video posted on Tuesday that Mendy was passed over for the Yashin Trophy because of his race, rather than because Donnarumma was a more qualified candidate for the award.

The former France international also criticised attitudes toward the African Cup of Nations, which begins in Cameroon in January and is being hosted by the country.

"Can you tell me about Edouard Mendy," the goalkeeper asked. However, because we are the monkeys, no one is paying attention to the African Cup, which is understandable.

The only competition in which you must leave your club for three weeks in order to compete is the African Cup of Nations, for which we always have a limited amount of room in Africa."

"However, things will change, things will change," the narrator declares emphatically.
