Pirates break their silence about the team’s performance yesterday: “Disappointing”

The Orlando Pirates technical team is wondering what will it take for their players to get perform well on the pitch and do what they’re taught at training. Pirates co-coach Fadlu Davids feels that their players have been misfiring and that’s just disappointing to watch. This follows after the Buccaneers failed to take their opportunities against Maritzburg United on Wednesday afternoon. What even made the situation worse for Davids was seeing his side struggle to break down a 10-men Maritzburg side at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

This meant that Pirates have a lot of work to do if they want to challenge for the DStv Premiership title. At the moment their performance isn’t pleasing on the eye, let alone convincing. It seems like the Sea Robbers have a steep hill to climb, as they’ve now gone four matches without a victory. On top of that, they’ve only scored one goal in these games, which is worrying for a team of Pirates’ caliber. This has left Davids and Mandla Ncikazi under immense pressure as interim co-coaches. “Quite disappointing in the first half not to take advantage of the opportunities we created,” said Davids talking to SuperSport TV after the match.

Davids felt that the Team of Choice stuck to their guns of defensive play and didn’t make it easy for Pirates to have a run at them, as they were playing with four centre-backs in the first half. However, in the second half, they made it five centre backs which showed the Pirates that they only wanted a point from the game. Even though the Buccaneers tried to penetrate them in different positions within the game but they failed. “Of course, on the other hand, you have to give credit to the opponent for their defensive display. Yes, they never had a shot on target or disturbed our goalkeeper, but then it falls on us to be able to unlock the defensive line,” said Davids talking to SuperSport TV.
