Opinion: What Chiefs goalkeeper does not realise after saying this about Sundowns

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi could be getting ahead of himself by already trying to draw comparisons with DStv Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Chiefs have been hyping themselves up since climbing up to second on the log with a 3-1 thrashing of Swallows and are already counting themselves as title contenders.

Amakhosi are currently eight points behind leaders Sundowns on the log, who have a game in hand but are already declaring themselves as title rivals to the Brazilians.

That's probably too soon and they need to stay humble before comparing themselves to Masandawana.

Chiefs have not yet shown the consistency that Sundowns have shown so far and are relying on future prospects to make themselves relevant in the title talk.

Amakhosi shot-stopper Akpeyi made his own observation that Sundowns are not top of the log because they play well but they are top because they pick up victories even when it's difficult.

"The most important thing is for you to win your games. Sundowns are on top of the log not because they’re always that fantastic or what but they’re there because they’re picking up points even when it’s difficult," the Nigerian told SowetanLive.

"We have to do the same. Playing nice football comes second, winning is the most important thing."

Sundowns have not really faced a difficult match because they have simplified their football more than any other side in the league.

When most teams stay deep against them and when the goals don't come, the Brazilians are always patient and variate their attacks.

They can score via a set-piece, on combination play, through forced errors or individual brilliance.

If you compare them with Chiefs, they don't play openly and are relying on counter-attacks only, which means if the opposition scores, they are already in trouble because they have not mastered another way of creating chances.

Amakhosi are starting to pick up form with the deadly combination of Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly but can they function without either one of them?

For instance, against AmaZulu Billiat was missing through illness and they missed him dearly, as they were fortunate to come away with a 1-1 draw after Cole Alexander got a red-card around the hour-mark and they defended the entire match.

Chiefs could be second on the log but mind the gap, they are still eight points behind, which a lot, if you consider that Sundowns have a game in hand.

Apart from the Swallows match, which other game have Chiefs bossed and were control of?

Sundowns are just on another level, once they score first, you just feel that the win is in the bag, as they still retain control of the match, while with Chiefs, even if they can score two goals, there's nerves that they can blow it, as they will be throwing in defender after defender, from the bench to protect the lead.
