Update on Fortune Makaringe

Benson Mhlongo, a former Orlando Pirates defender, has urged Fortune Makaringe to “deliver” for the club rather than for himself, and has also requested support for the linkman.

This season, Makaringe has made two Premier Soccer League appearances for Pirates in his third season with the club.

The former Maritzburg United star appeared in 28 games last season and 26 games the season before when he joined the Soweto giants.

Mhlongo believes Mandla Ncikazi's co-coach, Pirates assistant coach Fadlu Davids, is the best man to aid the youngster, having previously worked with Makaringe at the KwaZulu-Natal club.

“He is in desperate need of assistance.” According to Sowetan Live, Mhlongo stated, "He needs a somebody who will take over from him when he's off form."

“I believe Makaringe puts himself under too much strain. He wanted to accomplish too much after leaving Maritzburg. He comprehends Makaringe better now that Fadlu is back. All I ask is for him to assist him in settling down.

“Keep in mind that when you play for the Pirates, you instantly become famous. Now, that eagerness may lead you to play the game not for the sake of the game, but for the sake of showcasing oneself.

"You don't have to shine for the Pirates; you just have to deliver." It's a distinction.”

Mhlongo also mentioned Siphesihle Ndlovu, a former Maritzburg United player who has struggled to make an impact for the Buccaneers since his arrival.

Ndlovu, like Makaringe, is in his third season with the Pirates and has already appeared in two league games.

“You can see both he [Makaringe] and Siphesihle Ndlovu are battling a little bit because they wanted to take over like they did at Maritzburg,” Mhlongo said.

“First, they must settle in before attempting to take over. Because I believe they enjoy carrying the burden, but the weight of the Pirates is excessive.

“If they can settle in and play the game simply, you can show your skill and what you have in terms of getting forward and scoring until you've played a few more games. Makaringe, I believe, is putting up too much effort, which is currently a disadvantage.”

Makaringe and Ndlovu's participation in Pirates' next encounter, a trip to Cape Town City on Saturday, is still unknown.
