Royal failed to move above Kaizer Chiefs in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) log table after suffering a defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns on Monday afternoon.
The club's hopes of finishing the season on second place took a huge blow after failing to collect points against the log leaders.
Royal AM are among of the teams that are gunning for the second place finish this season to qualify for the CAF champions League next season.
The Kwazulu Natal side is competing with the likes of Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City for the top two finish.
Chiefs are already out of the top two race after dropping points at the weekend following a 2-2 against Swallows FC.
If Royal AM managed to collect maximum points this afternoon the club could have secured the second place since the club have a healthy goal difference compared to the second placed CT City.
Now the club will have to win their next game against Pirates who are also aiming for the top two finish this season.
Royal remained on fifth place with 46 points collected after match day 29 just below Amakhosi who already concluded their season at the weekend.
The game started on a strong note as Sundowns wanted to conclude their season with a bang.
The Brazilians created early chances as the club wanted to score early in the game.
Gaston Sirino opened the scoreline in the 13th minutes and put the visitors in the early lead.
The home side also had their own chances in the first half without using any of their chances.
As a results the game entered the halftime break with the visitors leading by a single goal.
Three minutes into the second half, Sundowns extended their lead through Thabiso Kutumela in the 48th minutes.
Peter Shalulile made it 3-0 in the 61 minutes and Sundowns had a healthy lead.
However Victor Letsoalo pulled one back for the home side in the 69th minutes.
Seven minutes later Mogaila scored the second goal for the home side in the 76th minutes and made it 3-2.
The game ended with 3-2 in favour of Sundowns who took maximum points.
