How Banyana Pulled Off A Rare Win Over Rivals Nigeria

In their 2-1 triumph over Nigeria, the 11-time defending champions of Africa, in their inaugural Women's Africa Cup of Nations Group C match on Monday in Rabat, Morocco, Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has explained what her team performed well.

Ellis believes her team members deserve kudos for carrying out the strategy perfectly.

Ellis claimed that Banyana played to their advantages by keeping the ball on the ground since they were aware they couldn't match Nigeria's physical capabilities and were a level above the Super Falcons.

The players were exceptional; they executed the plan perfectly. Perhaps in the first half we could have played a lot of passes through, but we performed much better second half, said Ellis after the news conference after the game.

We knew we couldn't physically compete with them, but our strength was putting the ball on the ground and moving it much faster.

Because it was slow, we didn't play through the channels in the first half. We controlled the tempo, and I think the players moved the ball much more efficiently in the second half as a result of more passing and switching.

Because we believed that if we rushed them, they would make mistakes, which is how the goals were scored, we stopped their long balls. The idea was executed beautifully, but there is still work to be done, according to Ellis. The Banyana coach cautioned his players after overcoming the tournament favorites.Keeping in mind that each of their upcoming meetings will be vital, they all argue against being comfortable.

We needed these three points badly because we wanted to do well and set the bar high for the rest of the competition. She continued, We won't underestimate any team because we've seen teams that are already here.

We'll make sure to prepare and plan ahead. Just know that we will never underestimate any team. As you can see, Mali was defeated by Senegal, while Equatorial Guinea was defeated by Tunisia.

The following match for Banyana is against Burundi on Thursday, July 7.
