OPINION: Why Poyet Ignored Messi to Choose an African Player as The Deserved Ballon D'or Winner

Gustavo Poyet, a former Chelsea FC player, has voiced his opinion on the ongoing debate about who should win the next Ballon D'Or. The winner of the coveted prizes will be determined by the Ballon D'or award, which will be held on November 29th, 2021. Many prominent players were named to the award's final list, including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe, Robert Lewandowski, Karim Benzema, Jorginho, N'Golo Kante, and many others.

Despite Messi's accomplishments in 2021, the former Chelsea FC star chose Mohamed Salah as the player who deserved to receive the award ahead of him. "Sure, you can't vote for Lionel Messi at the Ballon d'Or," Gustavo said in an interview with Al-Hayah TV. "It should be Salah because he is the best, and he deserves to win it."

Gustavo Poyet's claim is supported up by the fact that Mohamed Salah has appeared in 167 games for Liverpool FC, scoring 107 goals and providing 39 assists. So far this season, he has scored 10 goals in 12 games for Liverpool FC. Salah, according to Gustavo Poyet, should be elected to win the Ballon d'Or in 2021 because he is currently the best player ahead of Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain.

If Mohamed Salah wins the award, it will be a huge victory and a huge accomplishment for Africa. It will be the second time an African has won the trophy, with former Liberian international George Weah becoming the first and only African to do so in 1995 while playing for AC Milan. All eyes will now be on the Ballon D'or in the run-up to the coronation, which will take place on November 29th, 2021.
