Orlando Pirates supporters are famous for being too optimistic and hopeful that their team would win championship titles. The same sentiments were evident when Micho and Rhulani Mokoena were still in charge of the Buccaneers, even though under their leadership, Orlando Pirates had still failed to clinch any championship title. The only thing that the Orlando Pirates supporters were left to celebrate was the beautiful style of play that was displayed under the mentorship and guidance of Micho.
Presently, Orlando Pirates is in the guidance and mentorship of a German tactician by the name of Josef Zinnbauer. During the 2020/21 football season, the Buccaneers have managed to successfully win the MTN8 tournament after six long years of drought. Over the weekend Orlando Pirates displayed a five star football as they managed to come from a goal down, as they successfully managed to win 3-1 against Maritzburg United who were leading them from the first half.
It took the Buccaneers a minute for them to score two consecutive goals that gave them an upper hand against the host team. After the Nedbank cup victory the Buccaneers have found themselves facing off against Bloemfontein Celtic, and after a quiet first half Josef Zinnbauer's charges managed to score the only goal for the match as they managed to win 1 nil against Bloemfontein Celtic, and this victory pushed the Buccaneers to move up to third position in the DStv Premiership.
After this victory there has been speculations that finally, Orlando Pirates has a chance to at least compete for the Premier Soccer League title. With that being said, Josef Zinnbauer had to comment on this issue as the head coach of Orlando Pirates and give a directive about his aims with the Soweto giants. Zinnbauer has indicated that his team is not yet set to qualify to be called league contenders as they do not have enough points to be considered as such.
Josef Zinnbauer was honest enough to admit that his side has not had a fair run in the DStv Premiership campaign as they were inconsistent. And on this match against Bloemfontein Celtic, the Buccaneers did not use their 1 man advantage in order to walk over Bloemfontein Celtic after Ndumiso Mabena was red carded minutes before the half time whistle. "Difficult game, not the best performance from us, but recently we had a lot of games and here we didn't play so well but we have three points," said Zinnbauer as he was being interviewed by SuperSport TV.
And when being questioned about possibilities of gunning for the league campaign, Josef Zinnbauer said, "we have not enough points we can talk about the top of the log, it's not possible. We look from game to game, we have also the cup in the handbag, we have to see what happens in the future. When we come closer we can talk about title."
After Orlando Pirates won against Bloemfontein Celtic, they saw themselves moving to third position with 32 points in total, after 19 games played. SuperSport United are currently on second position with 33 points and then Mamelodi Sundowns, who are also the defending champions of the Premier Soccer League are currently sitting comfortably on top of the league with 36 points with 16 games played thus far, this means that Mamelodi Sundowns are three games behind from both Pirates and SuperSport.
