[Opinion]Rising star burns potential bridge to Chiefs' Naturena village?

Despite not winning a major trophy in six years, Kaizer Chiefs continue to dominate the headlines whenever there is a string of poor results and that is a sign of a big team.

There is a perception now, especially since there are no fans in the stadium and Chiefs have been struggling since the Covid-19 pandemic began, bottling the league title on the final matchday of the 2019/20 season, inside the bio-bubble.

That they are not a big team anymore, based on the ability to get results alone, during this period of no fans inside the stadium, particularly since Mamelodi Sundowns have been so dominant in the DStv Premiership.

However, professional players and coaches in the league should draw the line between being competitive and disrepectful, for the sake of their careers.

AmaZulu goalkeeper Veli Mothwa came out this week ahead of their clash with Kaizer Chiefs, with condescending comments that Amakhosi are no longer a big club.

"Is Kaizer Chiefs still a big team? Yeah, back then they were but now I doubt it. We can play them anytime now with due respect," Mothwa said, according to Soccer Laduma.

It was put to Mothwa that they still have a bigger fan base but he did not tone down his stance.

"Fans are not playing, we are playing. I can assure you that the character we had last season, you will see this weekend. No one is bigger than anyone on the field," he said.

Of course Mothwa is entitled to his opinion but as a professional, he should choose his words carefully, because just by that statement he could be burning a potential bridge that could be leading to Chiefs' village in future.

Whether Chiefs are still big or not, they are still a massive brand and professional players and coaches aspire to play for teams or coach at teams that can pay them bigger salaries, as a matter of course and Amakhosi is one of them.

Mothwa is a good goalkeeper, he moved from Chippa United to a bigger club than the Chilli Boys to AmaZulu and Usuthu are not the limit, he obviously aspires to play for an even bigger club.

The former Chippa goalkeeper is now a national team player and you never know if Chiefs are going to be interested in changing his life in future, especially with goalkeepers Itumeleng Khune and Daniel Akpeyi reaching the twilight of their careers.

Do you think Mothwa will regret disrespecting Chiefs?
