Following being in charge for 13 games, eight losses, one draw and four wins, a Premier Soccer League team has decided to let go of their head coach Joel Masutha. As he was in charge of the GladAfrica Championship side Pretoria Callies and they have released an official statement to confirm his departure. “Pretoria Callies head coach Joel Masutha [has] parted ways with the club with immediate effect. Masutha joined towards the end of the 2020/21 season where he finished in the top eight on the log and also led the team to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Chippa United in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals,” read the official statement released by Callies.

The 40-year-old South African tactician’s technical team was dismantled and followed him on his departure. As Callies wanted new faces at the helm that will come with resolutions within the club. Masutha’s position will be temporally filled by the former Kaizer Chiefs striker Edwin Sitayitayi as the club is still looking for a permanent mentor. “The club also confirms [the] departure of technical team that includes, Steven Macfarlane, Bafana Nhlapo, Mpho Maruping, Given Banda operations manager Benedictus Mogotsi and team manager Mandla Mabena… Meanwhile, the former Kaizer Chiefs and Callies striker Edwin Sitayitayi is the caretaker coach until further notice,” read the Callies official statement.

The Pretoria Callies chairman Moses Malada has also confirmed the departure of Masutha alongside his technical team. Malada wished them the best in their future endeavours as the club will now have to rebuild their technical team. The Chairman revealed that Masutha had to leave due to a string of poor results. “Yes, coach Masutha has resigned and we accepted that, but he’s a good coach, unfortunately, results were not coming as expected which I think he realised it hence he decided to reign… We appreciate having worked with him. We would also like to thank the other technical team members for their dedication and wish everyone all the best in their careers,” said Malada speaking to the media.
