Sundowns came from 1-0 behind to escape a defeat against Stellenbosch FC

Date: 04/12/2021

Stellenbosch FC was brave when they hosted Mamelodi Sundowns in their latest home fixture in the Dstv Premiership as they held the league log leaders to a 1-1 draw at full-time. Stellenbosch FC should have capitalised on the lead when they opened the scoring in the match after Mamelodi Sundowns made an error in their box, as Stellenbosch was awarded a penalty in the first half of the match just before half-time.

Stellenbosch FC's Junior Mendieta found the back of the net in the 43rd minute to claim the 1-0 lead in the match when he scored from the penalty spot. Stellenbosch FC held onto their lead and went on break leading with the one goal advantage. The second half of the match played out in Sundowns favour as they scored to escape a defeat and to remain unbeaten in the league to date.

Mamelodi Sundowns got on the score board when Lyle Lakay fired a shot in the 59th minute to level the score on 1-1. Both clubs defended well enough for the match to end in a 1-1 draw at full-time as they shared the spoils. Mamelodi Sundowns after their one point from the fixture pushed their points up to 31 in the top spot as Stellenbosch FC's one point left them hanging in the 4th place spot as they dropped the second place spot when they allowed Sundowns to score against them.

If Stellenbosch FC had to hold onto their 1-0 lead in the match, it would've been Sundowns first defeat in the league, but all thanks to Lyle Lakay, the league champions remains unbeaten after they played 13 matches to date. Stellenbosch FC's goal against Sundowns means that they are only the second club to score against the champions this season as Sundowns conceded their other two goals against SuperSport United, as they have conceded three goals to date.
