Mokwena reveals what made Sundowns throw away a 2-0 lead yesterday

Mamelodi Sundowns have set the bar higher in the DStv Premiership, hence, whatever they do will forever be in the spotlight. The crazy thing is that their fans take draws as losses, hence when Sundowns walk away with a draw they get criticised. After all, they want their club to win the league with a lot of games to spare. When Sundowns fumbled a two goals lead against their archrivals SuperSport United, there was a question asked about their strength in the dying minutes of the game. Even though the Tswane Derby was entertaining, unfortunately, it ended in a 2-2 draw. This might be a worry for the Brazilians as they’ve registered two draws in a row, the other one was against Cape Town City.

Now, the Downs co-coach Rulani Mokwena has dissected where they went wrong on the field of play, which opened a gate of mistakes and that’s when SuperSport pounced on them without thinking twice. Mokwena felt that his team wasn’t playing their normal game, as they were too fast when they had the ball, they wanted to play long balls, which at times went direct and even vertical. Their game plan wasn’t successful as Matsatsantsa was equal to the task. “Everything for today to be honest I think we played too fast, too vertical, too direct, too many long balls that compromise too many things. You lose a little bit of a feeling of control of the pitch, you lose your compactness because you have time to be close to each other so when you play too fast this is what happens,” said Mokwena on his post-match interview on SuperSport TV.

Also, the former Chippa United coach stated that they’ve learnt a lot from their archrivals and they will take a point from the game. Since a single point is better than nothing. What Mokwena was pleased about is that they won’t talk about not conceding any more, since their deadlock has been broken. “You then turn possession away, but ok then good we move, we take a point, no cry. We just soldier on, it’s still a long season. The good thing the monkey is of our back now. We can’t talk about conceding any more. So that’s probably a good thing, the pressure is off the players,” said Mokwena talking to SuperSport TV.
