Breaking news || The Orlando Pirates decline is due to Lorch and Pule's issues find Out more here

The Orlando Pirates' decline is due to Lorch and Pule's issues.

This is in sharp contrast to prior seasons, when the duo was crucial to the Buccaneers' offensive success.

Thembinkosi Lorch and Vincent Pule have made modest contributions in what has been a dismal season by the Orlando Pirates' own lofty standards.

Pule has been out since October after injuring himself while on Bafana Bafana duty, while Lorch's impact has been limited due to a combination of injury and disciplinary troubles.

Pule has only appeared in seven league and cup games for Bucs this season, while Lorch has appeared in 11 of the club's 26 league games, five Caf Confederation Cup matches, and two Nedbank Cup matches. He has yet to score and only three assists to his credit.

When you compare that to their past seasons with the Pirates, it's easy to see where the Bucs have fallen short.

Lorch scored 28 goals and added 25 assists in 125 games with the Pirates over his last four-and-a-half season.

This equates to nearly one goal per two games, compared to barely one goal every six games this season.

Pule has three assists in seven games this season, demonstrating to the Pirates what they have been missing.

He's played 109 games with the Sea Robbers in the past two seasons, scoring 21 goals and assisting on eight occasions.

It's clear what the Pirates have been missing in this season's campaign.

Lorch has been more engaged of late, however he has yet to regain his best form, as evidenced by his frustrating effort in the 0-0 draw with Chippa United in midweek.

Up front, the Pirates have struggled to convert their superior overall play into goals, and none of their strikers has impressed this season.

That's partly owing to their own poor form, but it could also be down to a lack of quality service from midfield, which has left Deon Hotto to carry the load.

Fortune Makaringe has been adequate but not spectacular, while Terrence Dzvukamanja, Linda Mntambo, and Kabelo Dlamini have all disappointed.

As a result of misfiring attackers and a scarcity of quality supply, the Pirates lack potency and a cutting edge in the final third.

Is there a ray of hope at the end of the tunnel?

Pule is due to return from injury any day now, and while Lorch hasn't been at his best yet, he has been able to get some match minutes and fitness in the last few weeks.

Pirates are still in the Caf Confederation Cup, and if Lorch and Pule can recover their best form fast – individually and as a combination – and help get the likes of Kwame Peprah, Tshegofatso Mabasa, Zakhele Lepasa, and Gabadinho Mhango scoring, there's no reason why they can't reach the final.
