Kaizer Chiefs are known to be one of the most successful footballing teams in the country, their dominance dates back to the first few years when the team was founded. They have always been known as cup specialist.

Currently the Naturena based side is going through one of the roughest patches in its entire history.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys last tested success in the 2014/15 season under the mentorship of Stuart Baxter where they were to win the league double, winning the Absa Premiership and the MTN 8. Kaizer Chiefs by then were one of the most feared teams with the pairing defence of Tefu Mashaimate and Morgan Gould.

The start of team's problems started in the 2015/16 season when the team failed to tie down their best asset coach Stuart Baxter and would then introduce Steve Komphela. Chiefs did not just lose their mentor but they would also allow their Captain Tefu Mashaimaite to purse an overseas move, it was at a time when they needed a leader but decided to part ways with him.

Kaizer Chiefs would then go on to sign Defender Siyanda Xulu as a replacement for Mashaimate. During that season the team went to make mediocre signings with the introductions of Ivan Bukenya, Camaldine Abraw, Sula Matovu, Bongani Ndulula and Sphelele Mthembu. In 2016 they still introduced other average signings Edmore Chirambadare and Michelle Katsivairo who dismally failed to deliver.

In 2017 still under the leadership of Komphela the team would also lose key players, hard working defensive midfielder Lucky Baloyi and midfielder maestro George Lebese. After the departure of Komphela in 2018, they went to appoint Coach Enerst Middendorp. The team had at times the pairing of Gustavo Paez and Ryan Moon as their front pair, the two were just not lethal forwards. The start of their current problems was when they signed Adrianna "Dax" Manana, a player who later had no impact on the team. Amakhosi finished the season placed 9th, failing to gain automatic qualification to the MTN 8 Cup.

In the 2019/20 season they became contenders of the league title, leading on points midway throughout the season only to lose the league title on the last day. Chiefs had one of the best squad completing in that season, but the signing of Lazarus Kambole didn't not produce any result. He was not the kind of player who was able to carry the team and produce on big stages.

A lot of Kaizer Chiefs fans would say the departure of George Maluleka in the end had an impact on the leagues outcome. Going back from 2015 Kaizer Chiefs have lost Tefu Mashaimate, George Lebese, Hendrick Eikstein, Morgan Gould and George Maluleka in key positions. One can only ask which players were signed in those key positions after their departure.

The best decision the team has since been able to make in these was acquiring the services of Khama Billiat, Leonardo Castro and Samir Nurkovic. It is about time the team digs deeper into their pockets and acquire some of the best players after their transfer ban, if they continue running their ship like this I foresee it sinking.
