Nigerian legend heaps praises to Kaizer Chiefs star.
Akpeyi is among of the players from the Premier Soccer League (PSL) who were called up to present their national teams in the continental show piece.
Akpeyi alongside with Orlando Pirates defender Olisa Ndah were the only Nigerian players from the PSL to be called to be part of the Super Eagles squad.
However the duo have not participated in any games so far in the tournament.
Akpeyi has been replaced as the country's number one goalkeeper by Maduko Okoye who was between the poles on a win against Egypt early this week.
However speaking to Chiefs media Okocha said Akpeyi is an important player in the Nigerian squad.
Okocha said the 35-year old Akpeyi only lost his spot due to any injury and that shows how strong the Nigerian squad is.
"Once you miss out because of injury it is always difficult to get back for a goalkeeper,"he said.
He added that he believes that they have a good squad and players like Akpeyi whom they can rely on when they are needed.
Okocha said he is happy that Nigeria has a competition in the goalkeeping department because that will give the coach extra options.
The Nigerian legend also expressed his happiness after his nation started the tournament on a winning note after defeating Egypt.
He said the whole squad showed that they are prepared for the tournament and has emphasized that it is important to start these kind of tournaments on a winning note.
Okocha concluded that every player in the squad plays an important role and the players who came in took over from the ones who were substituted.
