Kaizer Chiefs club legend and all-time leading goalscorer, Maponyane, begs for consistency from the Chiefs players.
Amakhosi are in in sixth place in the Dstv Premiership standings, having accrued 18 points from 11 games played.
With Sunday's vital 1-0 away win over bogey rival Maritzburg United, new head coach Stuart Baxter has now won five games in his second stint in charge of the club.
"It's critical to stay consistent in order to track your growth," Maponyane says in an interview with Kickoff.
It will not instill trust in any of the supporters if they keep on winning and losing.
"However, to those who are objective, particularly those such as myself who have played for a variety of teams, improvement or consistency, or the lack thereof, is what matters.
"If they want to mount a championship challenge, they need to be constant in their efforts."
In terms of expectations, they still have a larger fanbase than most other bands. Other clubs have gone their entire lives without winning a trophy, but it is often noted that the Chiefs and Pirates have gone an extended period of time without winning a trophy in a row.
This demonstrates that they are still relevant in people's lives.
"However, in order to do it, they must be consistent." I'm not saying they shouldn't lose, but if they can go four games without losing, they will have made some progress.
"However, taking one stride forward and then two steps back is not effective. We'll just have to wait till the AmaZulu game at home, which should be quite entertaining."
