Following Stuart Baxter's dismissal, Zwane and Dillon Sheppard took over as caretakers until the end of the season.
"We want someone who understands the club's concept and ethos," said Molefi Ntseki, the Chiefs' director of football.
The Chiefs want the coach to "restore the club's glory days," according to Ntseki.
"We went over the traits a coach should have, and he comes into that category, having worked with players and having been at the club and understanding the ins and outs."
Sheppard will also serve as an assistant coach for the Chiefs.Zwane has been named the permanent head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.
