PSL get crucial advice to suspend their matches, here is why

The Premier Soccer League might have to rethink their approach during the new normal. Something has to give for the PSL to act appropriately and protect numerous teams from getting on the wrong side of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, the PSL has been advised to put everything on pause following the high cases of the new variant that might cause the fourth wave in South Africa. There was hope that fans will slowly get back to stadiums and enjoy the football action live. Unfortunately, the way things are going in Mzansi certain precautionary measures might be taken to make sure that the virus doesn’t spread.

This follows after Kaizer Chiefs have been immensely affected by the Coronavirus in a way that there are not enough players that can represent their team in the DStv Premiership. As it is reported that about 31 players and backroom staff at Naturena tested positive for COVID-19 and they’re now on self-isolation. Hence, the former Chiefs coach Sergio dos Santos has called for PSL to postpone fixtures for the whole of December. This is what Amakhosi want as they felt that their lives are at state, hence shutting down all the football competitions will be ideal for the clubs. According to Dos Santos, PSL needs to put the safety of the players, match officials and club’s backroom staff lives first and not worry about the fixtures. “The important thing here is the safety of the players, the safety of the personnel that work at the club. That’s more important than playing matches and letting people be exposed to the new virus,” said Dos Santos speaking to the media.

Amakhosi stated in their appeal to PSL to suspend their December matches as they don’t have enough players available to compete in the DStv Premiership. Now, the football expert has stated that PSL will have to consider Chiefs appeal and suspend the fixtures until next year January. “What they can do immediately is to suspend Chiefs games while other fixtures continue then see what happens in the next few weeks. There is no question about it. It’s better for the league to maybe suspend the games between now and the end of the year. Then restart playing in the new year. It might be a good idea,” said Dos Santos speaking to the media.
