Barcelona famously unveiled a black and gold replica jersey, similar to that of Kaizer Chiefs' commemorative 50th year anniversary strip released in January 2020, with suggestions that they could have been inspired by the Soweto giants.
At the time, Chiefs expressed disappointment that, Nike, who sponsor both Amakhosi and the Catalan giants, did not give them the opportunity to stock more quantities of jersey for the local market, since there was a huge demand.
The Marketing Director at the Glamour Boys, Jessica Motaung was quoted by SowetanLive as saying they were told by Nike that the material for the limited edition jersey was not available, only for the same material to resurface as a new season's jersey for Barcelona.
"I was made aware of the new Barcelona design before it hit the market, and I have to be honest we were surprised," Motaung told SowetanLive.
“Also because of the major outcry for stock that we had [for the 50th jersey]. It should have been produced for a market that was very excited for a 50th jersey.
"We have a wonderful partnership with Nike, but in this instance we’re slightly disappointed that we missed the opportunity to really take it further with our supporters for our 50th at the level that we anticipated, and also to leverage revenue," she said.
However, Amakhosi find themselves in almost a similar position as Barcelona, in that their coaches, Stuart Baxter and Ronald Koeman are facing a possibility of being relieved of duties very early in the season after bad starts to the seasons.
Blaugrana have not been too badly in LaLiga but their form in the UEFA Champions League, back-to-back losses to Bayern Munich and Benfica, with 3-0 scorelines, has put Koeman on the firing line.
According to Forbes, Barcelona are in meetings to make the decision on whether Koeman stays or not imminently, after the 3-0 loss to Benfica in midweek.
Given that it's still early in the season and there could be doubts, whether Baxter is the right man to lead Amakhosi or not, especially after an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to minnows, Royal AM, the Glamour Boys could be looking at the developments in Barcelona, to see whether they part ways with Koeman or trust in the processes made during the off-season after his appointment.
Any decision taken by the Barca board could influence Chiefs (depending on the upcoming results), in their coaching quandary with Baxter, who was re-hired with high expectations but has found the going tough, although it's still early in the season.
