Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has had a closer look at their next opponents in the DStv Premiership this weekend. As Sundowns have a “difficult” match against Stellenbosch FC at Danie Craven Stadium and their unbeaten record is at stake. Hence, the technical team had to study certain players that will cause problems on Saturday.
Mngqithi stated that Steve Barker’s side can be tricky in terms of their formation, especially if they have a versatile player like Zitha Macheke who can help in attack and also, is a superb defender. Macheke can easily work well with the midfielders and then connect with their attacker to put Sundowns under immense pressure. “Although in the build-up they look like they play with two centre backs you also have [Zitha] Macheke who starts more as a six in attacks, but in defence, you already have him as one of the three centre backs. So it makes them have three centre-backs and two wing-backs with midfielders in front of Macheke or Kwinika,” said Mngqithi speaking to the media about the Stellies key players.
The former AmaZulu mentor has stated that Stellies have dangerous front-three players namely Ashley du Preez, Stanley Dimgba and Junior Mendieta. Not only are these players skilful but they’re full of speed and they offer Stellenbosch a pacey counter-attack. However, Mngqithi stated that in their previous encounter last season they were able to defeat Stellies by 3-0 and he’s hoping that they will get similar results this weekend. “We know the speed is what they will look for in attack where they have Du Preez, Dimga and Mendieta who will cause us problems. We know very well in the last match they gave us a good run of our money but at the end of the day we managed to conquer,” said Mngqithi talking to the media.
