Two-Legged CAFCL Final To Return, Per Motsepe CAF President Patrice Motsepe has declared.
Two-Legged CAF Champions League Finals Will Return.
After concerns were raised about Morocco being given the opportunity to host the final of the most recent Champions League, the head of Africa's football governing organisation made the announcement.
Wydad Casablanca and Al Ahly, two dominant Moroccan teams, faced off in the tournament's championship match at the Stade Mohammed V. This decision incited outrage, particularly from Red Devils president Mahmoud Khatib.
"We'll take care of that. According to the Sowetan, Motsepe promised that this would never happen again during the SA National Editors Forum in Johannesburg.
"I inherited it, and I was unable to change it.
The choice was made in front of me. Because of the Al Ahly followers in Egypt and, of course, Pitso (Mosimane), my favourite coach and a former Al Ahly coach, we will have a two-legged final.
In the 2018–19 season, the only CAFCL final to be decided over two legs was won by Esperance de Tunis in contentious circumstances.
The African Women's Cup of Nations (AWCON) and the CAF Awards are also scheduled to be held in Morocco, thus Motsepe also defended his organization's choice to hold a number of CAF-related events there.
"Are we moving everything to Morocco? Let me tell you something: No nation, club, or country will have privileged status while I'm CAF president," he continued.
Again, perception rather than actual facts is what is at issue with regard to Morocco being given preference." "The women's competition is in Morocco and we're inviting all of the other presidents to come there because it costs us less money because everyone is there," he added. "And the reason why we have the CAF Awards in Morocco is because they're having the women's (AWCON) in Morocco. We'll have a fantastic CAF Awards, and before I go, let me emphasise that I'm very sensitive to the idea that we shouldn't appear to be favouring Morocco or any particular nation." And I can guarantee you that this is the message I want to emphasise when I have all the presidents there.
Having said that, more money is allocated and donated for the growth of football in Africa by Morocco than by any other African nation. This is a fact.
"I'd want to end by expressing that I'm more alive than ever to make sure that all nations and clubs are treated equitably.
I completely understand the president of Al Ahly's dissatisfaction (about Morocco hosting the CAF Champions League final), and we'll make sure that we treat everyone fairly.
